I’m 46, 6'5", and I used to weigh over 400 pounds.

I lost 150 pounds by changing my habits in the kitchen, not by hating food.

No Ozempic. No surgery. No miracles.

Just learning to cook differently.

Not a diet. A behavior change.

Welcome to The Tall Order Kitchen

For people who love food but hate diets.

This is me now...

...but for most of my adult life this hasn't been me.

I love food, and for years I have loved to cook food, and think about what to cook, and of course eat food. I own hundreds of cook books, I devour food writing and food tv shows.

There is nothing wrong with any of these statements, except that for basically my whole adult life I had been obese. Something had to change.

I totally re-invented what I cook with, and how I cook.

But I still love cooking and eating the food that I make.

I am happy to make something that requires lots of processes, or that might take a long time, or that might take some forward planning. That to me is a love of cooking. If you're looking for just easy, quick, healthy mealplans that you can batch cook and re-heat each night of the week - you're in the wrong place. I loathe batchcooking. It has not contributed to my weightloss.

I do also make quick and healthy meals, but variety of what I eat is part of what has made this sustainable for me. Eating the same few meals constantly on rotation makes me have naughty thoughts about eating the sorts of food that got me to over 400lbs in the first place.

Now I'm under 250 pounds. Still working on it, but for the first time as an adult, I'm not obese. I haven't given up food I love - I've found new food to love. This isn't a diet. It's a behavior change. And it started in the kitchen!

I'm tall, it has been a tall order to make these changes - welcome to The Tall Order Kitchen!

What can you expect?

I'm not a doctor, or a nutritionist - I am not here to preach to you, or to shame you.

I am going to share the strategies that worked for me, some of the recipes I have used regularly to lose 150lbs, some of the food swaps that I have made - if any of my story resonates with you, I hope you'll find something useful for you journey.

"I've always loved cooking! I make the best Sunday roasts and it's always been a real source of price for me to be a really good home chef!

But, I've slowly realised as the weight has kept on creeping on that what I've been making is not really good for me! I wasn't interested in starving myself or eating some plain salads! I wanted real food that I make, but just healthier! It's been eye opening to discover Stephen's recipes and tricks! "

"I've struggled with my weight and love of food for years! I've thought of myself as a passionate foodie for a long time!

But every time I went on a diet, I felt like I was starving myself, or eating the same thing over and over again which just made me crave the bad foods and the cheat days!

I really wanted to find another way of truly enjoying food but still able to lose weight and look after myself. Stephen's swaps have been truly lifechanging!"

Anne D.

"I've been really tying to lose weight for a while now with very limited results! The thing is, I've been focusing on small portions, but I felt constantly starving and hangry!

And I just didn't trust myself to make food at home that was truly good for me! I relied on the lowest calorie packaged food I could get at the shops!

I came across Stephen's recipes and was instantly hooked! Real food that tastes amazing and I can make at home that's not boring or leaving me hungry? Yes please!!"

Here are some things that did NOT help me lose 150 lbs...

Calory counting. Did not do this one day to lose 150 lbs. It ends up being just estimates in and estimates out which has never had a useful result for me.

Cheat days. I haven't felt hungry, or deprived. I have definitely eaten out, and when I do I might have gelato or a pizza. It's not one day a week that I'm looking forward to because the rest of the week is so hard though.

"Diet" branded foods. Often I find they might be low in sugar or fat, but those elements have been replaced with other things that aren't great for you either.

Batch cooking. The same food on repeat, mealprepping, endless salads, no thank you! Food is joy and I want to cook and eat food that I'm genuinely excited about!

Beating myself up when I make a bad food choice. I've done this before - it's the point you stop recording on whatever system you're using. I'm not. Just start again. Whatever the bad food choice was - it won't matter when you're where you want to be.

Starving myself. Eating the way that I have been, I don't feel hungry after meals. My plates are full of food! It's just cooked differently, and the make up of what's on the plate has changed. Any "diet" I've tried where you look at the miserable portion on your plate in disgust before you've even started eating it has never worked for me.
